Personal Injury Lawyer Shares Insight into MN and WI Boating Accidents

Did you know that between Minnesota and Wisconsin combined, there are more than 26,000 lakes used for recreation? It’s true. They’re used for everything from seasonal fishing to ice jeep racing. And unfortunately, those visits don’t always end pleasantly. We’ve been in contact with some of the states’ record keepers and dug up a few facts:

Personal Injury Lawyer Views Boating Accident Stats

Just last year, in Wisconsin alone, almost 60 people were injured and more than 20 died. In addition, insurance companies paid out more than $675,000 in property damages to people associated with the year’s recreational boating accidents. Many of the people who died were between the ages of 40 and 79.

In Minnesota, the statistics for 2015 weren’t available yet but we were able to look all the way back to the 1940s. So we can say with some measure of confidence, that their 2015 boating accident statistics are likely less than Wisconsin’s. We base this on the fact that a little over 40 people died in both 2013 and 2014. Plus, the state’s accident statistics have been on the decline since 2012.

Personal Injury Lawyers Discover Why Boating Mishaps Occur

Although no two boating accidents in either state are apt to be identical, there are often common denominators present. Among them are intoxication, drug use, negligence, inexperience, faulty equipment and inadequate safety measures in place. And the fatalities frequently involve hypothermia, head or chest trauma and drowning. But they are by no means the only boating injuries that may contribute to an unfortunate outcome.
